I’m running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a Compaq NC6000, the OS, the SW, the PC and
other peripherals are on the most recent update, updated driver or firmware
update.
The PC has two devices attached that seem to be the cause of the problem: an
Intel CS330 USB Web Camera and a (WiFi connected) Photsmart 2710
Multifunction printer (with scanner included).
The problem’s symptoms appeared a week ago, disappeared the next day and now
has appeared again. In my opinion these are interrelated and they are:
1. When typing an address into the Address Bar in IE6, the browser takes
30-45 seconds to respond. When selecting a Favorite or choosing a site from
the Address Bar drop-down list, clicking on a hyperlink, or typing in a site
using the Windows Start/Run dialog box, IE responds immediately.
2. When opening an instance of My Computer, it takes 30-45 seconds for the
system inventory (drives, peripherals) in the right pane and the folder list
in the left pane, to be displayed.
3. The Web Camera is listed in Device Manager and is recognized and used by
software like NetMeeting and MSN Messenger, however it doesn’t appear listed
in My Computer nor in the Scanners and Camera wizard. The issue of the camera
not appearing in My Computer seems to be what causes the delay in browsing
for the inventory and when typing URLs in IE.
4. Windows Image Acquisition Service fails to start, when I try to start it
manually the service sends the following error message “Error 1067. Process
terminated unexpectedlyâ€.
What I have tried so far:
• A thorough search in the KB, all sorts of newsgroups and forums and of
course in the 3 leading search engines. What I found is that others have the
problem but nobody has found an answer.
• I have unplugged and plugged the camera including an attempt with a
re-boot in between; I have upgraded the driver; I have rolled back the
driver; I have uninstalled the device and had the PC re-booting in order to
have the device recognized again.
• I have uninstalled the Intel Camera and installed a different one (Genius)
with exactly the same results.
• I have uninstalled the camera driver and unplugged the camera and then
performed a re-boot without the camera.
• I have tried to changed the settings of the WIA service to “Automaticâ€
start; I have modified the following Registry key to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stisvc"Start"=dword:00000004; I have tried to start the WIA service manually… all of those to no avail.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
