I am having a problem with the web browser suddenly
closing when I click on an option in various web sites. It
happens with IE6, Opera 7.2 and Netscape 7.1. It occurs in
a number of different web sites and it always happens when
in Lycos chat after logging in and attempting to enter any
chat room. Since it is a problem with 3 different browsers
I have to assume that the problem lies somewhere in
Windows (I'm running XP Pro with SP1 and all current
updates/patches as of 10/16/03). I'd appreciate any
insights anyone might have regarding this problem.
Thanks, Jack

Do you have the java virtual machine installed. Some sites wont load
properly without it.

To test, go to
www.adslguide.org

and click on speed test at the top right hand corner.

If you just get a grey box then you need vm
http://java.com/en/index.jsp

Have you set any internet security settings in IE ?

Are you running a firewall like zone alarm which has privacy settings, this
can prevent cookies and banner ads and the like loading.
Unfortunately restricting these can affect some sites, for example, I have
turn off the privacy settings when accessing windows update or the page
doesn't load properly

Give the url of a page where you are having the problem and I'll see if I
get it too.

Paul,
Thanks for the help.
It appears that it was a VM related problem. I got the
problem resolved with Opera and Netscape by downloading
the appropriate Java files. I haven't gotten I.E. fixed,
but that's not a big deal and I'll keep messing with it
and I'm sure I'll get it taken care of too.
Thanks again for the help.

In contro panel/ internet options/advanced tab

Is there a Java(Sun) box with the coffee cup logo, with Use Java 2 v
1.4.2_01 for <applet>
with a tick in it ?

And under security do you have your internet zone set to medium
