Can somebody please explain why microsft appears to have no intention of
allowing windows mail to access web based mail accounts?
Most portable accounts are web based so surely they are what most people
will now tend to use as opposed to their isp email account.
Is there some hidden evil in these accounts that I am unaware of or is there
another reason microsoft is now making my life that little bit more difficult?

Maybe Windows Live Mail would be worth a look:

Thanks john, but I believe this only works with hotmail. I really don't want
to change my lycos address that I have been using for the past 4 years or so.

Did you read the FAQ? It mentions...Hotmail,
Yahoo!, AOL, Gmail.......it's certainly possible
that Lycos is supported also.

No, WLM is not just Hotmail.
It is a standard email client like WM, plus recent bug fixes,
and it happens to work with Hotmail accounts also.
Why dismiss something out of hand when you apparently
have little or no familiarity with its capabilities?

If your Lycos account won't work with Windows Mail you should be
harassing Lycos to do something about it. Gmail and Yahoo have
managed to work in conjunction with Windows Mail as it stands
so it's possible Lycos could too if they wanted.

I'm not sure M$ can be held responsible for other companies
failure to invest and compete in the market.

thanks john... just downloaded and run windows live mail and added my lycos
account but I get error messages with this account when sending/receiving.

Thanks peter... I have attempted to add lycos to the live mail I just
downloaded but I am getting error messages when sending/receiving with this
account.
Am using pop.lycos.co.uk and smtp.lycos.co.uk and ticked the authentication
thing.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Now that I've read the OP's statement again, I'm not so sure
what he meant. POP mail clients have never had general support
for all types of webmail, which seemingly is what he wants.

Gary VanderMolen

Sorry to interrupt your conversation but I'm still here.... ;-)

I just wanted to know why Windows Mail doesn't support web based mail like
OE used to. Its just that all I can find in the boards here is the general
statement that WM doesn't support web based mail. no reason given why. seems
like a backward step to me but hey, what do I know... I'm just a customer. (I
thought what we "seemingly want" might interest microsoft.... guess I was
wrong.... shame)

What makes you think that OE supported webmail?
It never did. There was a special exception for Hotmail.

Gary VanderMolen

Hello Gary.... Before I upgraded to vista I had been using OE to access my
lycos account for about a year or so (using POP and SMTP settings)... along
with my gmail account. Now WM can access my gmail account but not lycos and
the standard line on here is that WM will not be offering access to web based
accounts. I just want to be able to continue with the same set up using
vista. I don't think thats unreasonable.

If Lycos has POP/SMTP servers, then Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail should
be able to access them just fine, as well as your Gmail account.
I thought you were talking about web mail only.

Oh...well, I thought it was worth a try.

Do the following steps offer anything new?

Lycos Mail Settings:

The Lycos Mail Plus service allows you to
use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing
your Lycos mailbox.

Lycos Mail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) -
pop.mail.lycos.com (port 110)

Outgoing Mail Server -
smtp.mail.lycos.com

Or use your local ISP SMTP mail server

Sorry...the settings I posted may not work in the UK.

I guess you entered your Lycos ID Name and Password?

Whooops. I did not realize that you are talking about the UK version. Unfortunately I have no idea then if it will work or not. The US version will

We're not mind readers.

If you have error messages post them here in full.
