Web Access crawls without http:// added in front of URL

Hi,
I have a very strang problem on one XP SP2 PRO PC with IE6.0xxxx , im not
sure if the problem is entirely Internet explorer , but will try to explain.

If we type in www.microsoft.com it takes about 2 mins before the page
appears, but entering http://www.microsoft.com produces the page within a
few seconds.

We have also noticed that when opening FILE explorer that the wandering
searchlight wanderes about for about a min or two before show half the file
list, then about another min before we get the full list.

Could this be a dns issue?

I have Tried ipconfig /flushdns , the ipconfig /registerdns, to no effect i
know this machine has been "Fixed" by a few "Computer experts" and would
love to be the one to finally nail it. Everything seams to work fine except
for this almigthy delay.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not exactly. It is almost certainly a sign of an Address bar search
hijacking. It's possible that the hijacker's site is closed or otherwise
not available and thus causing the delay you've noticed.

Take a look in the Status bar to compare the two requests
as they are being made. What do you see there?
Tip: use Fullscreen mode (e.g. press F11) to maximize
the size of the Status bar. Activate the Status bar in
Fullscreen mode if necessary (e.g. press Alt-V,B).
You might be able to slow the response and rendering
down to see the status changes more clearly by activating
prompts as much as possible, e.g. using both the Security
tab and the Privacy tab.

I would be interested in helping you diagnose the symptom
(e.g. by taking a packet trace to prove that your incomplete
request is being included as a parameter into some spyware
site's request.) You could use netcap (from the XP Support Tools)
to capture such packets and Ethereal (freeware) to format them.

Otherwise just search other's posts in this newsgroup
for tips for dealing with spyware and malware.
