WE folders losing their view setting

Dan

Ever since I got used to the old "program manager" back in 3.1, I have
always set up a WE folder which would open on boot & contain shortcuts for
frequently used programs. I then set up sub folders for different
categories of programs, and I can toggle to the open folder easily to select
programs. I find this more convenient than using the desktop or start menu.
This has always worked fine, but for some reason recently this programs
folder & the
3 sub folders it contains keeps losing their "icons" view setting, instead
defaulting to "details". I've reset it repeatedly, but on each boot I have
to set each folder again. Also, the "Remember each folder's view settings"
under
"tools/folder options/view" is already selected for the folders in
question. Can't imagine why this has changed, how might I
get it top remember to open in "icon" mode?

TIA

Dan

Hi Dan,

I know it's an old trick, but did you try clicking on File, holding down
the Shift key and click Close for the folders in question? This used to
force a write of the configuration where just clicking the X does not.

Also, have you ever looked at PowerDesk by Vcom? They have a free
version that might do everything you want and more. It allow two panes,
a toolbar to launch apps and much more. I have used the paid version
for years and the free version before that (right after Win95 and
Explorer couldn't do dual panes).

Is SP2 installed?

Thanks, I'll ive the shift thing a try. I'd prefer to get this back to
working, hate to add another bit running in the background if it's not
really essential.

Dan

Is SP2 installed?

Rock-Yes, it is. I should say that I've just noticed the icon setting will
revert to details in the sub folders even w/o a reboot, or the main folder
being closed.

Dan

Sounds like the index to saved views might be full & the views are being
deleted to make room for others. The attached zip file contains a script
that will report on the maximum number of views that can be saved, the
current number of index entries, & the actual # of saved views. Run the
script & post back the results, please.

Keith, I couldn't help but run your script on my PC because the same
problem occurs here! XP2 Home. Checked TweakUI and the folders setting
is at 700 yet the script says the setting is 400, count is 400 and saved
is 400! Does this mean it's maxed out <g>

How do we get the maximum views increased? TweakUI must not work
properly with this or I am misunderstanding what Tweak is setting.

TIA

I commented above on TweakUI. Just found out why it doesn't work.
TweakUI v2.1 uses an INCORRECT registry entry! Instead of the entry
being 'BagMRU Size', tweak places an entry of 'Bag MRU Size'. Close, but
it doesn't work! Hmmmm

Is there another version which has it correct?

Keith-Thanks for that, the data are:

Max views = 5000
Index Entry Count = 5000
Saved View Count = 2210

Not sure of the implications!

Thanks again,

Dan

When Max Views = Index Entry Count, it means that every time Explorer wants
to save a new view, it has to pick one to delete -- and that selection
process is flawed. Folders rooted on the Desktop are most susceptable to
losing their saved views -- and a long-ago-deleted folder that was several
layers deep in the file system may still be wasting an index entry.

You can use the reg edit found here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 2, right-hand column. It will increase the view limit to 8000 & delete
all saved views & give you a fresh start.

If you want different views for large numbers of folders, I've written a
script to apply those quickly. Go with the option to delete all saved views
to clear things out. Here's the canned description & link:

---
I've written a script that will apply all the view customizations you can
set to all of a folder's
subfolders. Right-click the link below & save to your computer. The zip
file contains a readme
file & the script itself.

http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip

You can select a folder & configure its view settings, then those are set to
be inherited by all
subfolders (you have the option of saving or wiping out current saved views)
.. You can set a
default for My Pics, another for My Music, and then a more generic default
for My Computer. The
inheritance settings are separate from the folder view itself -- for
example, you can set a
non-grouped view to be the default inheritance for My Computer, then return
My Computer to its
standard 'group by type' layout after running the script without affecting
the default view you have
set.

Rename the entry manually:

Start -> Run -> regedit<Enter>

Navigate to:

"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam"

In the right-hand pane, hi-lite 'Bag MRU Size', press <F2>, and delete the
space between Bag & MRU.

Very interesting page, BTW!

I keep meaning to learn something about HTML & get a web page up, but I
think the space my ISP gives me for photos works rather nicely for file
transfer :)
