A year ago, it would have been a tragedy to lose Munich to string pulling by
Microsoft Insiders who want tacquiredt Linux.

Obviously, the forces of corruption, evil and lying have raised their head,
and are trying to forestall the inevitable.

But this is a different year.

The 2.6 is a roaring success.

Linux is displacing Microsoft in the data center.

The desktop has grown, so that paid shipments now exceed that of the OSX,
and even the stooge 'research company' IDC reports that /paid/ linux
shipments may reach 6%.

And for every paid percentage, you know there are several percentage points
of people who simply burned or aquired their favorite distro from
friends...

So, Steve Ballmer -- play your tricks, call in your chits. You can't self
police every PC, everywhere.

The people have gotten too smart for M$ dirty tricks.

It is not so much a question of when Linux will reign; but a matter of when
Microsoft scum will be washed into the bath drain...

I believe the "Microsoft scum" in question does not include users of
M$ software. Figure it out.

IDC extemely optimistic predictions put Linux at 6% marketshare in
2007, then 10% around 2035.

You chose to respond, but not to criticize the original poster...

Those who sit quietly are barely less culpable than you, who take the effort
to correct the original statement, and assert my lack of mental capacity.
You are no less guilty of hatred than the person who started this absurd
conversation.

While the following phrase has become cliche on the internet, I would assert
that it stands true in this context:
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do
nothing.

I respond not because the original message was posted at all, for I honor
the right to speak freely, nor that it was posted on an advocacy NG, for
that is clearly an appropriate place for strong opinions. I respond because
it was cross-posted on a NG that is populated by a grand set of knowledgable
and generous individuals, mostly unpaid volunteers, who devote their time
and expertise to helping others to solve specific technical problems.

I neither beg nor demand that you show respect. I ask only that you
consider how you would feel if you were sitting in a theatre-sized room with
hundreds of simultaneous friendly conversations going on, and someone ducked
in the door, yelled hateful epithets, and ran off, too cowardly to defend
their statement or let themselves be known. What would go through your
mind? Would you be uplifted? Would you think kindly of the statements or
the person who made them?

If you would find this behavior distressing when done to you, and yet you
sit quiet as other folks are made victim, you stand in poor company indeed.

How powerless you must feel, to spread hatred to an entire community of men
and women for the actions of one individual?

We do not control Ballmer. He is not a member of our technical community.
The OP is a member of yours.

Those of us who wish to engage a discussion on Ballmer's comments, as
pointless as that may be, will visit your forum. I do not make that choice.

I do not disparage your rights, nor do I take a position on Mr. Ballmer's
comments. Rail against his position if you'd like. Advocate yours. All
that is fine.

I ask only that you refrain from sharing hatred and hyperbole with
non-participants like us, in our purely technical, non partisan, NG.

Not really, Mr. Malik. He's a troll trying to cause trouble. And neither
is our silence an indication that we condone its behavior, merely that we
have robost killfiles.

One of the functions of comp.os.linux.advocacy is to try and keep these
trolls out of the technical Linux groups, but unfortunately they often
crosspost into the MS ones to try and create trouble.

I agree with you and wholeheartedly sympathize, but given the nature of the
media the best we can do is to generally ignore them and occasionally
ridicule them.

Please don't let your frustration at them cause you to mischaracterize the
rest of us who just like discussing the merits of, and learning about, our
platform of choice.

As a reasonable person, you must try to understand that there are those
who are putting Linux and Open Source Software in a head-to-head position
against everything Microsoft out of some personal vendetta.

There are also those of us who use and advocate Linux and OSS simply
because we like it and feel it is a better solution. You must understand
that the latter would never have posted to your ng in the first place, so
of course the OP must have been in the former category.

You may want to use a narrower brush when painting your opinions across
the board. Just a friendly FYI.
