For some time now, we had been successfully using WDS on Server 2003 w/SP2 to
deploy our custom XP images. Our process involves capturing sysprepped
images using ImageX from within a WinPE, then adding those images into our
WDS repo (we do not use a WDS capture image). Normally, clients would then
boot into WDS from PXE and apply the images.
Recently, I tried to build a new set of images to include some updated
software packages we commonly use. I built an initial vanilla configuration
from a fresh install of XP SP2 via our install CD and applied recent OS
updates. I sysprepped the vanilla configuration, imaged it, then appended
various sysprepped software configurations into the vanilla image. I then
added these images (from one .wim file) into our WDS repo.
However, when a client boots into WDS via PXE and tries to apply any image
other than the vanilla image, it will only get so far and produce the
following error - "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files
required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error
code: 0x80070020"
When the client reboots and unsuccesfully tries to load the OS (as the image
did not finish applying) it appears they are all getting stuck on the same
file - Windows\System32\Config\System.
Interestingly enough, when a client applies any image from within a WinPE
using the ImageX command (imagex /apply) any image will successfully apply
and boot without a problem. The error only appears to occur within WDS.
