I have a 500Gig WD h/d and a NextStar 3 usb enclosure and a problem

*I can only format when the drive is attached as an IDE device. I then
attach it to the usb and and works great...I copy files into it then after I
turn the computer off and hte usb drive off

*I then turn the computer aon and the usb HD on and it won't read my drive
anymore. It gives me an I/O error when I try to access it and I can't
format it as an USB drive. jumper is set to master as what it should be.

DISK MANAGEMENT says its status is healthy and partition is basic but shows
nothing as FILE SYSTEM.

If I do this procedure again it will work then samething will happen again.
I tried fron and back usb connectors.

Should I try an external powered usb hub or try changing from usb 2.0 to
usb 1.1 in the bios?

Try to assign a high drive letter to the drive when you format it.
Or with disk manager, try giving the drive a high drive letter.
You can do that by right-clicking on the partition area diskmanager
shows.
I had this problem with two thumb drives, trying to claim the same
drive letter, and also with an usb harddisk and a thumb drive.

usb 1.1 is so much slower that you won't want it even if it solved this
problem.

Do you unmount the usb drive before powering down?

Trying the drive on another computer would at least localize the problem
to either your computer or the external drive.

I set my usb device in the bios to 1.1 and now it works. I can format it
and unplug ang plug the usb cable back in and restart my computer and it
works. I then reset my bios usb device to 1.1+2.0 setting and rebooted then
device came back up and worked. I then unmounted and tried to remount the
drive under the 2.0 setting and it wouldn't work again. This time I went
back to 1.1 in the bios and rebooted and it came back up and worked. I want
this deive to work permanently in 2.0. The question is, is it getting
different power requirements under 1.1 then 2.0? Would a powered usb hub
work better if it was plugged into a usb @ 2.0 setting in the bios?

Are you plugging the drive into a front mounted USB port, or
a rear USB port ?

The front mounted ports, consist of a poorly made PCB assembly,
with a cable leading back to the motherboard.

The rear mounted ports, consist of a USB stacked connector,
soldered right to the motherboard. That allows control of the
proper impedance for the USB signals, and makes it the
responsibility of the motherboard manufacturer, that the
USB port works.

When they slap a cable assembly into the front of the computer,
only the assembler is in a position to care whether it works or
not.

Antec, a maker of computer cases, released a large number of
cases (on purpose), with cable assemblies on the front that
would only work at USB 1.1 rates. Attempting to operate at
USB 2 rates, led to communications failures. Owners of Antec
products could contact the company, and have them send a proper
USB2 capable cable assembly and PCB.

If you try a connector on the back of the computer, it might
actually work at USB2 rates.

well its deffinently a M/B problem. Even my flash drive wldn't wrk under
USB 2.0 and the powered hub didn't make a difference. My printer and
logitech cam are not affected by it. I think I will have to get a PCI USB
2.0 card.

Maybe. Or something borked in your operating system.
