Hi........

I've got to replace an ailing 40Gb HD, and I've narrowed it down to either the WD
WD400JB w/8Mb cache or the IBM 120GXP. Can anyone tell me which is the faster drive?

Thanks for any info,

They don't have listings for the 40 GB drives. I presume that the 40 GB
versions are single-platter designs, and comparable to the larger drives
listed (WD800JB with two platters, IBM 120GXP with three).

The benchmarks make it look like there's not much to choose, although the WD
drive benefits from an 8 MB cache (vs. 2 MB for the IBM).

Some call the IBM drives the "Deathstar" series, suggesting that they don't
last. I've had faithful service from the 60GXP in my work machine for two
years. I've had a WD800JB in my home machine for about as long.

But why a 40 GB drive? That's smallish by current standards. ;-)

Good luck.

There's bugger all in it speed wise. I bet you wouldnt
be able to pick the drive in a proper double blind trial
without being able to use a benchmark or diagnostic.

I'd avoid the IBM myself, just because their warranty
proceedures are much worse than with WD.

And I'd seriously consider if 40GB is the right size.
You pay very little more for 80GB drives now.

Thanks, Bob & Rob...........................

If there's no real time difference between them, I'll buy the WD.

The drive that's starting to fail is a 40Gb IBM 60GXP.It runs 24/7, and after 4 or 5
months, it's starting to make whining sounds that last about a minute and then
disappear for hours.........just enough to make me edgy!

I have been considering an exact-size replacement because I bought twin 40Gb
IBM's, and use the second one as a mirror by ghosting the first to it about once
a week. When both drives are the same size, a mirror backup is a snap with Ghost!
This backup system has worked very well for me, but maybe it's time
to increase volume! :--)

Keep those. They'll run for years and years on end.

*If necessary* you can set any drive to a lower capacity.

Don't know about faster, but I'd stay away from the WD400JB. Cause that's
exactly the model I have and it's BAD! Started out quiet and in 1 month
it's developed a terrible bearing noise. And if you read the groups,
you'll see that it's a very common problem for WD drives. The IBM/Hitachi
drives equally sucks. Unless you love getting RMA's and driving to UPS to
mail the drive back every 11 months, stay away from anything IBM/Hitachi.
GET A SEAGATE! GET THE BEST!

Thanks Folkert............

That may come in handy.

Both my WD 120 GB 8 MB buffer drives have been flawless so far.
Much more so than my deathstar 75 GXP 30 GB drive
which died very quickly, and I lost a lot of games (tho all were on
CD-rom), and more importantly, some save games for some RPG's, and
every Nvidia driver release from 5.13 to the mid 40's....needless to
say, I wasn't happy.

My 60 GXP 40 GB ibm drive is still working, but nothing goes on it
except porn videos and downloaded temporary files.
