I'm runing WD on a SONY VAIO laptop and have recently received the following
errors...
1) When attempting to manual scan...
Encountered an error: 0x800004003, Invalid Pointer
2) Does not seem to accept updates

I have done the MSIEXEC /x thingy with no luck.

The first issue, I think, is a bug which is fixed in currently downloadable
code. Check in help, about, and if the top number includes 1051, go to the
download center and get Windows Defender again--run the download to update
what you have in place.

Following that, go to Windows Update and do an express scan and put in
everything offered (there are new patches today)--let's see if the
combination of those two actions has a positive effect on the update issue.

Thanks Bill,
I did go to the WINDOWS UPDATE site (custome downloads) and downloaded an
update for XP, installed it, then powered the system down.

Powered it back up and according to WD, it ran a scan (which wasn't
scheduled to run until 2:00am and it was at 1:00pm then)

I did download the Installer cleanup tool @
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 and used it.
So right now, going to to a EXPRESS update, I find I need to re-install the
Genuine Advantage update & an XP update (REF: KB 900485)

So far, so good.

I'm in this process right now. Will let you know if there's any problems
with these steps.

Guys,

As of 6:00pm (EST) today, everything seems to be OK on the laptop. WD DID
run and is currently @ version 1.1.1051.0 w/ Engine ver. 1.1.1372.0 &
Signature ver. 1.14.1404.6 . I ran a Full WD scan @ 3:30 pm today and it was
successful. Afterwards I ran a virus scan (AVG)

I'm going to perform a restart in a minute to make absolutly sure everything
copacetic (I always wanted to use that word in a sentence.)

I wasn't real clear. You are not on the current newest UI code, which has a
fix for the scan error you saw, I believe.

Get that here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

I'm glad the update is taken care of--and the scan error is basically
cosmetic--you can scan via the menus even when the button fails with that
error.
