Hope this hasn't been asked but I can't find it. Please can anyone tell me if
I have to download the latest version from microsoft site the one I have is
version 1.1.1051.0.

Should be (we think):

Windows Defender Version 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version 1.1.1372.0
Definition Version 1.14.1402.2

You are one version behind. There's a new one at the download site, but not
publicized yet. Download, run it, it will upgrade. There will be a broader
advertizement eventually.
