I have the same problem as crisc updating WD. WD reports, that an update is
available however, it is not able to find it by itself. Trying the MS
homepage fails after validating the genuin software. The failure follows
requests to close files in use, although I close all programs not needed.
I am running version .....1051.....
What to do?

Version 1.1.1347.0 is out.

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

Perform a manual Windows update en see how it goes:

I would also recommend: Download and save to the desktop. Close all open
IE windows, and any open Windows Defender UI window before running the
downloaded installer.

I was able to download the "update" automatically, but I got the error
message about definitions being 172 days old, and then my entire system
crashed. I did a System Restore to a previous date and so far the system is
working. If I follow the above link , will that download the update, fix the
definitions problem, and hopefully fix the crash issue?
I'm just a bit concerned about crashing again..twice in one day is more than
enough. Thx.

The definitions are normally zeroed out after this update. Your machine
needs to connect, via either WindowsUpdate or AutoUpdate to update them.
(Windows Defender uses AutoUpdate to update definitions.)

Excellent: One last question, if I may:

Is your Internet Explorer set to delete the contents of Temporary Internet
Files when closing the browser?
