Happened to visit Microsoft updae just now and got this update offered. It
actually installed first time. :-)

Defender Definition 1.14.59.12
Windows Updates and Defender About Check for Updates both failed to
automatically update. Had to use KB915105 Resolution.

Count me in. My MicrosoftUpdate log shows 4 , count them 4 successful
applications of the definition update. However, only the last one, via
manually run Microsoft Update--worked as far as the Windows Defender UI is
concerned. I didn't do any of the futzing around with KB articles, or
repairs or uninstall/reinstalls--just went to MicrosoftUpdate after what I
thought were two attempts to install from within the program. Turns out
that AutoUpdate had made a previous try.

I am sorry to spoil things for those of you doomed with update failure, but
mine updated successfully. To date the only probs I have had was with the
1436.4 defs. Does anyone know what the 1440.0 engine is designed to address
or am I asking the obvious?

I don't know enough about the functionality of the individual bits and
pieces to know what's possible. My impression would be that the engine is
responsible for scanning and cleaning, and that changes to it are intended
to enhance those functions--but that's pure guesswork.

OK thanks Bill - I would be so nice if MS were a little more transparent with
these things rather than we mortals left guessing. While I would not expect
them to give away their trade secrets, it would be equally nice to have some
indication of what is supposed to be achieved - even if it is a simple
`scanning and detection enhancement` posted on the WD web site. On the other
hand, with so many beta applications currently on release, maybe they don`t
have the time for dotting the "I`s" and crossing the "T`s"

Nope. Wouldn't install any way. Had to R-click uninstall C:\Program
Files\Windows Defender\AS_Sigs.MSI as usual -- then About/Update -- and all
went OK. As usual.

Irritation still rules.
