I have just installed four new XP Pro pc´s with Windows Defender. After
download WD suggests update but when trying, just notifies:"Windows Defender
was unable to copmplete the update: 0x80072e8e".
What can I do?

Same problem here

Operating from within a corporate firewalled network, normal Internet
activity goes throuh a proxy as determined by IE Proxy settings

Judging from what I've seen here, it looks like this is the most common
problem that people are running into. Of course, this is by no means a
scientific study, just my casual observation. But It would seem to stem from
the fact that WD is now tied into Windows Update, whereas MSAS had it's own
update engine. Frankly, I think this was a mistake. Windows update is so
heavily regulated both my MS and by Group Policy in many enterprises, that
it's just not practical for an Anti-spyware application.

I've gone back to using MSAS until the beta period runs out for it in July,
at which point me and my company will be going with a third party application
unless WD is fixed.

Is there a firewall blocking access by SVCHOST to the Internet?

Windows Defender updates either by WindowsUpdate or Autoupdate--so these
need to work for it to update.

You might try going to WindowsUpdate to see if signature updates are
offered.

Same problem here. I am in the military and all of us really liked the MSAS -
easy to use and got through all of our firewalls. I was angry when I
installed it this weekend and it would not update - now telling me my
definitions are 33 days old. When I tried to download MSAS again to
re-install it, it no longer exists in Microsoft downloads! Fix it Microsoft!

If your corporate network admins restrict updates, and distribute them via
SUS or WSUS, then you need their help.

Windows Defender updates are distributed via Windows Update or AutoUpdate.

In the case of a corporate network, AutoUpdate may connect to SUS, or WSUS.
Windows Defender updates may be enabled over WSUS, at the choice of the WSUS
administrator.

They won't be made available over SUS--SUS has an end-of-life of December,
2006.
