WD not functioning

I don't think WD loaded properly on my pc (operating system XP) since I am
getting an error message when trying to open it up, my hard drive continues
to run constantly like it is being scanned and all the applications I open
are very slow. I have attempted to remove WD so I could reinstall but am
having no success. I'm looking for some direction to clean this up.

Joe - It sounds like there is some difficulty with your install all right.

Here's what I think I'd try: It seems to me that the most likely issue here
is the Windows Defender Service. I suspect that an uninstall routine first
has to stop this service before it can proceed, and perhaps that's the
problem--it is having trouble stopping the service.

If you go to a command prompt and type net stop windefend

and hit enter, what happens?

If the service stops neatly, can you then proceed with the uninstall?

If the service fails to stop, consider setting the service startup to
disabled:

at a command prompt:

sc config windefend start= disabled

(note the space between the = and disabled is required.)

Then restart the machine, and attempt the uninstall.

Lets see whether that does the trick?

I'd hold off a bit --lets see whether we can get it uninstalled normally
first.

I followed the instructions in the FAQ however WD was not on the list of
programs to be removed. I'm going to see what Bill Sanderson suggests next
and try that.

Bill - the net stop windefend seemed to work but I still have no way of
uninstalling windefend. Is there a command from the prompt to do this?

If WD is not showing up on the list of programs to uninstall, it may be
appropriate to use the Windows Installer Cleanup tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Install this, and see whether Windows Defender is listed by it as something
it can remove. If so, I'd go ahead and have it do that. That should allow
you to reinstall, which I hope will have better results--or at least get you
back to a stable system without Windows Defender half in half out.

I'm unclear from your posts whether you were able to follow the suggestions
I had in the other post?

If it isn't listed in add or remove programs, then the Windows Installer
Cleanup tool is what I'd try--see the other message.

I installed the windows Installer Cleanup tool as recommended. No problems
installing it. Started the Installer Cleanup tool and the only item listed
was Windows defender signatures [1.20.0.0] and I removed them as suggested.
I still have Windows Defender listed under All Programs. Since it was there
I attempted to start the program and strange thing was it started up. Every
thing looked normal so I initiated a quick scan and that also ran. Now the
continuous run is off, but right now everything seems normal. Just blind luck.

Thanks--that's interesting--I'll have to install the tool and see what's
happening.

So--apparently your installation is now functioning properly--but it still
isn't visible in add or remove programs?

That is correct it is not visible in add or remove programs.

There are detailed instructions in the FAQ how to uninstall WD:

My system restore was off way to long and nothing shows up that I
can
go back
to. When you say manual delete do you mean go to the program files
and
delete the folder or go to the control panel to delete the file.
I've
tried
the control panel but it seems as though nothing happens and it
just
hangs up.

:

ooo well can you go back even farther than that to restore. on
mine
it might
have 2 restore points per month. can u manuely delete WD

:

As you would have it I was going to use system restore but it was
not turned
on so I can't go back in time prior to the original download.

:

If you cant uninstall WD you can always use system restore.
start/all
programs/accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Restore it to
the
point
before you downloaded WD, then delete WD then reinstall. Hope
this
helps
