Anybody else catch this:

WGA enforcement - There are significant risks to running non-genuine
Windows. Only genuine Windows customers can receive product downloads,
Windows updates and special offers. Windows Defender will validate that your
copy of Windows is genuine before installation. Furthermore, Windows Defender
will only remove Severe threats for machines that are not genuine. Low,
Medium and High threats will be detected, but not removed unless your copy of
Windows is genuine. For more information, please visit
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

That's interesting. It is somewhat ambiguous, but I take it to mean that
installation is not blocked on machines which fail to pass WGA validation,
but that functionality is restricted.

Bill,

My hope is that at least:

"Low, Medium and High threats will be detected, but not removed " refer to
things that CanNot Spread,

and that:

"will only remove Severe threats" refers to All Threats that can spread.

By the way, about Engels link, that is to the update of Defender from Beta
to Gold, not just the new defs right?

?:-)

Not sure which link you are referring to--I know there's a link to the
upgrade in "dean dean"'s message--not sure whether Engel posted one or not.

I am not clear enough on the distinction between severe threat and high
threat to express an opinion at this point. I do see the decision to allow
installation and some cleaning as a very positive statement. I think
Microsoft's intention is to clean up the environment--and this is the right
thing to do.

However, if someone installs WD onto a computer which is INCORRECTLY
identified as having non-genuine software, then suffers some economic
damages from "non-severe" threats identified but not removed by WD, I would
like to be the lawyer for that suit (I am not a lawyer).

Therefore, although one MIGHT naively conclude that "Microsoft's intention
is to clean up the environment -- and that is the right thing to do", I do
not conclude that that is their real intention.
