Erik

Since a few days WD is installed on my computer. Sometimes I hear a soft
"plop" and the castle appears in my system tray. It carries a green dot.
So I am supposed to give my attention to something. Some change of the
settings perhaps. I don't know; nowhere in the program I can find what
happened, or an explanation. Or did I miss something?

Erik.

I haven't seen this--but it sure sounds real. The place to look for clues
would be in the System event log.

Right-click My Computer and choose manage.

Click on the + in front of event viewer to expand the event logs.

Click on the system event log.

Go up to view, pick the event source dropdown control, and scroll down to
WinDefend as the source, and click apply.

Then go through the events--look for yellow triangle events, or, if you can
pin the time down--go by time.

I'd be interested to hear what these are.

Thank you for guiding me to the place. MS has well hidden the message.

It says:

gestart.

Zie Help en ondersteuning op http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp
voor meer informatie.

Translated from Dutch:

Windows has saved the registry of user ERIKSCOMPUTER\Erik although an
application of service used the registry during the shutdown (??). The
memory for the registry is not fully available. The registry will be
removed from the registry (sic!!) when no longer in use.

This may be caused by services that are active as user accounts. Try to
configure the services so that they will be started as local servce
accounts or network service accounts.

See also Help and Support on http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp
for more information.

I did not configure anything, Windows configured itself and all its
services. I do not dare to schange anything because I do not know what I
am doing when I try. The link given tells me that no information is
available, look in Help and Support.

My suggestion is that notifications should be given in the program WD
itself. The information should not be tautological and not give advice
like in the second paragraph. How are we to "try and configure" services
we know nothing about?

Greetings,

Erik.

This is probably the new system alert. The new interface is supposed to
deliver a warning system and alerts you to the severity of a threat and
makes appropriate recommendations to help secure your computer.

My guess is this is what happens and the castle icon will appear with a
green dot.

I've seen that message myself, but never in relation to Windows Defender,
which, as you say, should have configured itself correctly, if installed by
an administrator.

If you installed on a non-English version of Windows before February 22, you
may wish to uninstall the current version, and do a new download and install
from that--the installer had some problems which were fixed with a new
version available approximately February 22.

I do not know whether the message I translated is connected to Windows
Defender. It is the only one that I could find.

I did a new install as you recommended, but I see no difference and
cannot find what the program wants to make clear by appearing with a
green dot for a few seconds in the system tray.

Erik.

A portion of Windows Defender is implemented as a System service, so that
message could possibly relate to Windows Defender.

I'm afraid I really can't tell what you are seeing--I've never seen this
appearance of the icon, myself--when I see green in front of the castle
wall, it has a white check-mark in it, and I can't recall just what it
signified, but it was easy to find out.

If you leave the UI open for a bit, does it change when these green dot
icons appear?
