I installed Windows Defender onto our School Library's PCs today and even
with AdAware and Symantec Antivirus, it found several problems including
WinTools (Severe Threat) on 3 of them. But it failed on its attempt to rid
the machines of it. It told me to try again, which I did several times, I
rebooted and tried; ran it in safe mode and tried. Any ideas?

Hi Steve,

Could you post the detection that you're getting?

Thanks for trying Windows Defender,
Joe

It was 0x80501001 error. I found that I could go to \localsettings\temp and
delete the offending file; seems to be working now. I don't know why
Windows Defender could not delete it (tb_setup.exe)

That error, I believe, indicates that the detection is a part of a set of
files in an archive. A .exe file could be an executable zip archive, for
example. When there's a detection in an archive, Microsoft does not want to
just delete the whole archive, in case there are uninfected but valuable
files in the archive as well.

Hmm, there is another PC next to the one I deleted with the same problem,
but today it wouldn't turn on (our bid deal is with Dell and the 2004 Dells
are infamous for going off but not coming back on!). When I get it on, I
will check to see if it is a zip. Shouldn't WD say why it failed to delete
the Severe Threat instead of just giving some cryptic error code? LOL

Mike did say that they were going to improve on the error messages as time
progresses..

Zips can be .exe's as well--not sure how you deal with that in native
XP--maybe rename it .zip and see if the zip folder tool will open it?
