WD Checkpoints

Has Microsoft made any comments about Windows Defender creating all
these checkpoints? Presumably it's a bug they will eventually fix??

Yes,

from general, Joe Falkner !

Sorry for our slow response on this issue.

We're working on a KB on how to turn this off, but here's the quick
rundown...

Build 1347 creates a restore point for every cleaning operation. We
believe
this is a good thing, however, the implementation makes taking "Allow"
actions on unknown detections a cleaning operation. We clearly need to
change this behavior in the future.. This "feature" is probably what
you're
seeing if you have many restore points created by WD. So if you have
notifications on for "Software that has not yet been classified for risks",
you're likely to get a bunch of restore points that aren't particularly
useful.

By unselecting this option, or by just not taking action on unknowns, you
can work around the spurious restore points and keep the RTP protection
active until we document how to turn these restore points off.

Thanks for your reports, and for trying Windows Defender,
Joe

Can anyone confirm that this works?
i.e. You had RTP (Real Time Protection) on and were getting many Defender
Restore/Check Points. You then took the advise below,
(turn off [UNcheck]:

"Choose if Windows Defender should notify you about:"
[x] Software that has not yet been classified for risks )

and then stopped getting the extra restore points created ????

At this point I have turned off RTP in order to stop the offending RPs from
being created. This of course defeats the purpose of being a BETA tester. I
have had no probelms with WD's on demand scanning features, but I get this
same Reactive/After the fact protection from the other products I use:
Ad-Aware SE,
SpyBot S&D,
Yahoo Anti-Spy.

It's the free Proactive RTP that make this product worth the testing, but
not at the cost of 18 Restore Points a week (in addition to any I might
choose to make or are made by a software install or by Windows Update).

I would be willing to try the fix, and turn RTP back on if I hear from some
of the more well known folks in the group that it works.

Thanks
Tim

Well, recently mainly due to this Restore Point -misery I've put WinDef
service (in "Services") to manual, and used WD only for on-demand scanning.
Now as being informed of this possibility, I try and give WD another chance.
So I disabled WinPatrol (which was my choice for system-protection), put
back WD on automatic startup, and enabled RTP. I will check new Restore
Points later, if any, created in excess to the ones I already have.
I'll update U all. By the way I run Win XP SP2, with Outpost 3,5 firewall,
NOD 32, and Diamond ProcessGuard. Besides I install-uninstall pretty
often...:)
Consider my timezone (GMT+1).
Good testin' Every1!

Same Old Story... Creating useless and multiple checkpoints in fact has NOT
ceased - despite my entire compliance with the abovementioned guideleines.
So I unable WD services, uncheck RTP, and occaisonally run WD as an
on-demand scanner. But I won't rely upon it as a real time protection
service-not anymore.
It really ain't a mature product, being as volatile as it is. So far so good.
Lookin' forward to using some more solid version - the next generazion:)

I also get Defender checkpoints corresponding in time to each and every
startup and restart.
