Sounds like Vista doesn't know what to do with your drive controller. You are
probably running the drive off either a RAID or odd SATA controller. Most
SATA cards are supported so my money is on some kind of RAID controller. In
either case you'll need a driver to get it to work.

There are two places to look for the driver
1. The system manufacturer's website, HP/Dell/etc. Built it yourself? Try
the motherboard manufacturer's site (asus/abit/etc) If they don't have a
Vista driver make note of the model number for the controller you have, it is
probably listed in the drivers download section. Look for something like
3ware Escalade 8506-12 RAID/SATA Driver for XP then use that as a reference
for option 2 below.
2. The website for the people who made the chipset that drives the
controller. (Highpoint/Promise/3ware/Adaptec)
In either case have the model numbers of the system or controller card handy.

If you have XP running you can find it under Device Manager, probably under
SCSI controllers.

I am using WDC WD400BB-75FJA1 Drive, windows is using a disk.sysa and
partmgr.sys in system32\drivers\ directory
the file version is 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

It is a IDE ATA Hard Drive, not SCSI.

This is on a Dell Computer The IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller is
Intel 82801DB Ultra ATA Controller

I ran Vista Upgrade checked on my system and it works fine, but when I
choose custom in the install of Vista, ad slet C: or D; (2nd partion) driver,
Vista says
I need a Driver for it. I was installing Vista on a second partion to save
the XP
because my friend tried Vista on his C: and it corrupted the disk, so that
he he
had to low level format it to get Vista off to go back to XP

I tried Western Digital Site no drivers available, I tried Dell and that is
much help either.

There are no such things as drivers for the hard drive. Any
drivers that would be required would be for the controller
the hard drive is connected to. If Vista is asking for
controller drivers then you need to contact the
manufacturer/vendor of the motherboard or computer. The
manufacturer or vendor is the source for hardware drivers,
not Microsoft.

Thanks for your help everyone, im not sure the error message is:
Vista needs drivers for the devie (Primary IDE channel), please load from
list or browse....

Which means Vista needs a controller driver for you IDE
controller. Again, the manufacturer or vendor is
responsible for writing and distributing hardware drivers,
not Microsoft. At least Vista permits you to use media
other than a floppy.

Okay I looked in devices
and I have and Intel 82801DB Ultra ATA Controller, I already stated that,
Intel web site says it is a Intell 845 Chipset
But I downloaded everything from intel that they had and it still doesnt work
in fact the bios really messed up my system, but i got it back.

Is there a place other than intel to get vista drivers?

I can forsee when this is realeased since the model of Dell I have is so
popular, thousands or millions of incapitability issues,

Intel certianly doesnt have any updates for the chip set,

(I dont know why you mentioned floppy i am not talking about floppy here.)

Intel is the source for their drivers. Microsoft does not
write them, they only include them in an OS distribution
after Intel supplies them the driver. You need to contact
Intel Tech Support to find out what your options are.

I mentioned floppy because in XP you had have the drivers on
a floppy disc and it was the only method of supplying
drivers to XP using F6 when needed for controllers not
included in the installation distribution. With Vista you
can use floppy, USB, or CD.

the pc is only 1 year old, and intel says there is no more support for that
product, now what?

My Delll is only 1 year old,
not even that i purchased it in dec 05
and intel says it no longer supports it.

all is left is there downloads which i tried...
if that is the case then like i said before microsoft has a huge problem
with selling this, because users are going to want to upgrade
with out having to purchase a new system.

got any more ideas?

If it were me I would stick with Win XP, which I plan to do
anyway.

I don't see any reason to upgrade to Vista.

AFAIK, this is a very common system, and should install without any extra
drivers.

Seems to me that either you're trying to do something weird, or either your
copy of vista or the hardware is a little broken.

Most likely source of problems might be your drive partioning.
