I have a WD 1200 JB drive that has problems. I have it mounted in an
Adeptec drive adapter which allows you to use an internal IDE drive to
be connected via a USB cable. I use it for backing up files. It worked
great for three years.
Now (suddenly) when I connect it, Windows explorer, and anything else
that accesses it, it locks up. Windows explorer does respond, but VERY
slowly: 15 minuets or so just to open explorer. I tried to right click
on it so I could run scandisk, but the dropdown list never appears.
Even WD's utilities are locked up.
The same thing happens in both my PC's. I have tried installing this
drive in the tower, but it is never recognized at startup.
It sounds OK at startup, (normal spin-up sound and no bearing faults),
though that's no guarantee. I am looking for a way to check this disk
at startup for corruption, or to try something else to check for
physical damage.
I'm running XP pro on both systems.

Had the same thing happen it would pass all the test you thought at it if
you could get it to run no strange noise or anything it just froze up after
25 minutes on the phone tech support had me flash it then it failed WD disk
test so i could get a RMA. now everything is fine

Be sure the jumper is set correctly when installing inside your PC. WD
drives have jumper setting for:
Master /alone
Master /with slave
Slave
Cable Select

If the PC's onboard bios can't detect the drive, its doubtful the WD tools
can. Use the WD utilities from boot media, not within XP, to eliminate any
problems originating from XP.
