Ways to minimize startup time

Gustaf

I got the impression that my laptop is slower at startup now then when
it was new. It's an HP laptop with a fully updated Windows XP SP2. The
ways I know to minimize the startup time is to remove unnecessary things
from the Startup folder, and under this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I do that regularly, but it's still quite slow. I'd like to know about
other ways to minimize the startup time.

How long does it take? When was the last time you did a clean up and defrag?

I defrag one a month or so, with PerfectDisk. I didn't time it, but I'd
guess startup time is about 1 minute until everything is fully loaded.
I'm not reporting a problem here. I just want to learn more ways to make
things faster, if there are any.

Although this is designed for shutdown not startup, I find it seems to make
a little difference to startup times.

Can't really say if this is a real difference or an imagined one but I
suspect that keeping the registry clean is always a good thing.

Also the utility Autoruns may help.

In fact there is a lot of useful stuff on that page and it's very reliable.

One minute isn't slow. Go fix a cup of coffee while you wait.

60 secs isn't that slow. Even plain vanilla system with only XP installed
and very limited services starting will still take about 40-45 secs. If you
want instant on you won't get it. But why not choose not to shut down?
Rather set the system to go into standby mode to reduce power consumption.

You might want to check the system BIOS to see if it has any setting for
Quickboot or Rapid Boot. Award BIOS has a setting The BIOS should also have
a setting to disable the Boot up floppy seek and to enable the Quick Power
on Self Test which speeds up the boot time. Also ensure you don't keep discs
in the CD/DVD drive as the BIOS might be trying to boot them too. --

Many thanks for all the responses here. I'll look into this more, even
though 1 minute is acceptable.

User Profile Hive cleanup utility doesn't have any impact on startup. It
helps remedy a situation where the user hive is kept open at shutdown by
some program. It doesn't change the registry at all.

Get rid of Norton/Symantec! Use something like Free AVG. Speeded mine
up noticeably. HTH, s

I agree it "Should not" but in some cases it "Seems to". I believe that is
what I said to the OP.
