Way to disable all Cleartype effects possible?

When I set the method of font smoothing to "standard" it looks terrible
although some applications then look okay. The rest look about as clear
as smooth fonts in under Linux. In other words, horrible. Isn't there a
way to go entirely back to the method used in W2K/XP?

It's the font that's used that looks horrible without cleartype. The
default font that Vista uses is designed for cleartype. To change the font,
right click on your desktop, go to personalize. Click visual appearance.
Click open classic appearance properties. Go to advanced. Under item,
change each one to a font like 'Arial' or 'Tahoma'. (For those that use
fonts that is.)

The only problem is, that WPF (Avalon) applications still use ClearType.
I guess MS wants to force it upon us...

When you use (right-click on desktop/personalize) - Visual Appearance
then you can select the Windows Classic theme (from Windows 2000). It
makes pretty much everything non-ClearType, but the cool effects are gone.

Not much point in upgrading if you have to do that, eh? Especially for
folks like me who will uninstall Windows Mail, WMP, Defender, the
firewall, etc. so we can use our own choice of applications instead.
