I am using XP Pro. Sometime after few our of work the Wave type sounds are
not
audible while I can still listen to music or other sound sources.

I am wondering if anybody have a solution for this problem.

When you say "Music or other sound sources", what do you mean?
CD? MP3? Game?

Have you tried using the built in sound recorder to record a WAV and play it
back?

John,

From your message it is not clear if you are having trouble with one type of
sound (wave files) ALL the time or if you are saying that you play some OK
and then suddenly the rest don't play.

I'll take a shot at the first interpretation and if that isn't the solution
please reply here with more specific info so one of us can help you further?

Double-click on your Speaker icon in the System Tray (right corner near
clock). Choose Options, Properties and under Playback make sure all the
different file types and sources that you actually use are selected, click
OK.

Now make sure "Mute" isn't chosen for one of the file types/sources that you
use and that the slider is pushed up towards the top for all but "Volume
Control". [Note: This is a matter of preference, but I leave all sliders
very close to the top and use the "Volume Control" as my master volume
control.]

Did that fix your problem?

Thank you both for anwsers, but NO , it did not solve the problem.

The problem is that the Wave type of sounds are heard properly all the time
.. In some point in time - after few hours of work - I cannot hear anymore
the sound of WAVE type or MIDI sounds. I have checked the controls and they
are NOT muted. The sliders are in the middle and the sound should sound.

I closed all my other applications, (I dont have games) including all the
other processes that I could from the task manager but the problem was not
solved. I than tried to hear MP3 song - no problem. Then I tried Video -
still OK. CD - OK. So the only problem are the Wave-Midi sounds. At the end
I turned off the XP and the shut down sound was heard!

From this I can only assume that some kind of process or service is locking
the application that making this particular sounds to be audible. I don't
know how to find this application.

The other thing that I notice was that when I try to play any of the Wave
type or Midi sounds the play button showing that is playing but actually it
stays like this forever and not finishing. That gave me the idea that some
process or service is locking the output..

I hope that I explained myself better.

Thank you.

Not sure this is what you're running into but it's a possibility that you
could look into:

Check the settings in the programs you use to listen to music. You may find
an option to use the program's mixer/volume controls or Windows. Many
of these programs that have their own and these will supercede Windows
while the program is being used. When the program is closed, managing
audio should be returned to Windows but sometimes that process fails and
the user ends up with no sound. Most programs that had trouble with this
have fixed it and/or they offer a setting such as I mentioned earlier.
