Watch out! HP P1100 Driver Hell!

O

Oscar Mendoza

I recently installed the new HP Photosmart 1100 driver on one of my PCs
(Dell 4500) with XP Pro SP 1, and ran into trouble; Soon after I installed
the new driver (2003) posted in their website all hell broke loose!! My
system became EXTREMELY slow, (how about 10-15 min. to bootup!). While this
is happening, there is no event logged, or any other info that will help you
troubleshoot. Troubleshooting this was tricky , the printer works fine after
you install the driver, there is no hint of any error, the system just hangs
in some tasks in not in others. After some research, I found out that for
some reason the system has trouble coming back from trying to read a
non-existent memory card (the P1100 has a slot for one) which is mapped to
the system as a storage device (hard drive) that shows up in the Disk Drives
listing on Device Manger. Well all that I had to do was to disabled it, that
was it, now my system is working just fine! My guess is that the driver
designers didn't bother testing the driver - WITHOUT A MEMORY STICK IN THE
SLOT!!!

Hope this helps someone!

Thanks for the tip on the flash card. Besides disabling the
card read on bootup, did you try just putting a blank, $10
card in the slot?
