Wasting of system resources

Hey guy, just having some serious problems I need fixed
asap. These are some technical problems that I was
wondering if you could help me with. My computer is a
Athlon XP 1800+, but running like it is a Pentium I 133.
The explorer.exe(usually takes 80% usage) and taskmgr.exe
(takes the other 20% usage) are taking up all the
resources for some reason. Sometimes they drop a little,
but immediately when i open up anything else, that newly
opened program skyrockets the percentage of CPU usage and
usually the explorer and task manager stay up after
that. There doesnt seem to be anything else too fishy in
the task group.

I tried using Norton Anti-vius. First I updated
with "Live-update", which took about half an hour. Then I
restarted and ran a full system scan. It took all
afternoon, probably about 5 hours, no exageration.
Nothing cme up as a virus.

I checked start-up in the start->programs menu, and there
was nothing there running in the background. Then I
checked start->run->"msconfig"->startup for anything
fishy, but nothing was there either.

One other thing I noticed that might help, but my be
irrelevant, is the startup time. When the PC first starts
up, it loads the OS just fine and quickly as it used to
until the login screen. Then I select my username, put in
the password and login. It seems to first slow down on
the "Loading your personal settings" phase of logging in.
Any suggestions? I am leaving tomorrow, but I will
probably be up late tonight trying to figure this out as
well as up early tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your time and help. Hopefully you know what's
going on here!

Something is hanging the system. Try checking event log. Open Control
Panel, then open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer and look for errors
that correspond with then this happens; double click the event, the
information inside might give a clue as to what is going on.

Also, at the XP desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen
appears, select "Check System Compatibility." If there is any problem
hardware or software, this should pick it up. If you can't do it from the
desktop, go into safe mode and try from there. Boot the system, start
tapping F8, from the menu, select safe mode and press enter.
