Was XP this bad at launch?

I upgraded to Vista because I had a bad XP MCE 2005 preloaded with tons of
crap and I wanted a clean OS. But I swear this thing has caused me so many
problems since I started. No Flash for the 64-bit explorer, wouldn't install
from DVD drive, won't install anything from the DVD drive, TV tuner doesn't
work, games running under XP SP2 compatibility mode are graphically glitched,
can't get Java to work. Granted, not all of these are MS's fault but all of
these problems are turning me off fast. I've already downloaded Virtual PC
and installed Windows XP again just so I can do everything I used to do and
now can't.

Sounds about like my memory of XP's original release.

Drivers unavailable, older apps incompatible, hardware not functional.

To answer your title question, it was worse.

Also stick with 32bit for right now.

Upgrade to 64bit around the time SP1 comes out, reason being that things
just aren't ready from vendors for Vista64. Not MS's fault, but the vendors
just have been dragging their feet.

Really? I'm running two 32bit Vista Ultimate's and one 64bit Ultimate. I
'm not having any problems with either.
Which ones are your running and what problems specifically are you having?

I've had both 32 and 64 bit installed and went with 64bit. To tell the
truth you will have just as many problems with either version.

The most significant issues with the 64 bit version are lack of drivers
and inability to run older applications.

Vista 32 also has driver issues (but not quite as bad), and won't run
some really old DOS programs that need to live in full screen (this
latter isn't really a fault of Vista, the time has come to move on
there).

I'm not referring to issues as far as the OS itself.

I'm meaning on the hardware driver front for most people.

My system is one of the systems that was used as a test-bed for Vista so
it's fully compatible with both 32-bit & 64-bit versions.

Right now though I'm choosing to run the 32-bit version.

If I upgrade to anything beyond 3GB of actual system memory though I will
upgrade to Ultimate64.
