Was that popup really from Windows Defender

I just got a popup, purportedly from Windows Defender asking me to send
information on Desktop.ini
Then I got another one asking me about mozystat.exe

As these popups just might have come from some virus, and I might be
handing them the keys to the kingdom, I declined.

Is there any way that I can prove that a given popup really *did* come
from the program it is claiming to have come from?

Obviously, Windows itself knows this nugget of information, otherwise it
wouldn't be able to pass my response back to Windows Defender (if that
is where it would have gone).

Yes, and I doubt there is anything wrong with it. I was more interested
in the generic case of identifying which process "owns" a particular
window that suddenly pops up on my system and starts asking questions.

If I could have been convinced that the popup originated from Windows
defender (as it claimed) then I would probably have clicked "OK". As it
was, I closed the window without clicking either button. So if it really
was Windows Defender, it just missed out on an opportunity to collect
some information.
