Warranty starts from what date?

I contacted Seagate about why my drive only had a 4 year instead of 5
year warranty. They said it was because the warranty starts from the
day the drives are shipped out to the retailers.

Is this pretty much an industry standard?

It seems that the customer is being misled about the actual duration of
their warranty here. By right, the drive's warranty should begin when
it starts to be *used*, instead of the time it has spent sitting on the
retailer's shelves not doing anything.

What if I buy an old product that is out of warranty? I would be buying
it under the mistaken impression it had an X year warranty.

Is it an OEM drive or retail?

Retail is from the time of the USERS purchase.

I was under the impression that the warranty starts when the customer makes
the purchase. That is the law where I am located. Naturally, the device has
to be purchased from an authorized dealer. If not, then the warranty may be
questionable.
