Duh, I thought porn picture lures were always safe.
Personally, I don't even download the post when I see the
size and subject line.

Now, if they were offering money from Nigeria or needed my
Citibank account numbers, or had Viagra for sale, then I'd
do the same.

There's another one now Joan which does contain a .SCR file - supposedly a
screensaver.

Hopefully I'll keep safe, I never look at any in the NG's that contain

problem <g> plus I'm happy with my screensaver, all the pictures that I
have in several folders in My Pictures <g>

Interestingly it seems that news.individual.net is filtering these posts - I
haven't seen any of them!

You're lucky - I hope it keeps that way for you.

I read the replies. I don't download anything over 4Kb. Is THAT safe ? I
did d-l a 1 Kb post on alt.os.windows-xp, opened, and it was in COLOR, i.e.
rich text ! Have things gotten so that smallest posts are now virus
carriers?

Hi

May I suggest that you don't open *any* email/news group attachments until
you have virus-checked them - even if they have come a 'reliable' source.

Will, this wasn't an attachment, but the main message (like what you're
reading right now). I am set to view these in plain text only. So my
question/concern is why did I/we get a post in RICH text? Has someone
figured out how to invade the system this way? If so, we're ALL in trouble
and Usenet is facing a sure demise as no one is going to save to disk, then
scan, every post; it's a matter of time consumption. Hope this clears up
earlier post.

Hi Malv

You would have to have this question of 'plain text' in one of the OE or
virus news groups:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.security.virus

My own practice is to go even further. Don't open any newsgroup
attachments at all. It's too easy to spoof the sender's ID and
what seems like a reliable source may not be. Besides, in
general, most reliable sources on newsgroups know better than to
send things in attachments.

A very small message posted as HTML could call the virus
from another website, a very good reason to read these
groups in text only.

But any 40-50 KB files is just too much, it could be a
virus, but it is just too big for the newsgroup purpose.

I have noticed that copy and paste from some websites, such
as MS, to clarify a point results in the text being shown as
plain text and images and such are converted to attachments,
even though they appeared in the body of the sent message
before it was sent.

I've noticed that some html posts from one of the mozilla news readers
(Firefox?) does not offer a plain text version of the message. I use
40tude's Dialog set to read in plain text. One of the things I like about
this news reader is if I come across an html only message, it will not
execute any embedded scripts.

Thanks for the responses to this. Am researching further.
