Warning: DScaler TV proggy

I was using DScaler for my ATI TV card because of the awesome picture quality.
But since then, today in fact, I was getting these long beeps from the case speaker,
so thinking it might be a CPU overheat warning I opened motherboard monitor
which showed temp of 46C, no overheat, it was the keyboard ps2 connection being
loose. But I noticed the CPU's % of use. My CPU is a C type P4 so it has the early
dual core hyper threader, and MBM5 showed the usage of CPU 1 to be 88% and
CPU 0 to be 0%. I then opened ATI 9.08 and usage became #1: 1-5% and #0:
7-14%. The temp then dropped to 40-41C.

I don't think DScaler is all too well written for threading, other than the great picture
quality, and not too safe for CPUs in the long run! Anyone else experience the same?
What is another great (free) TV proggy out there?

I enjoy DScaler for a number of reasons with my Pinnacle PCTV card. Like
you though, I find if my CPU (Athlon 3200) is hammered endlessly it can be
worth lots of degrees above the desirable temps I am at when using XP for
general puspose work. I'd regard 5c as high on a normal day, but I've
seen 56c under this kind of load in the summer! With six fans running.

What I have found is that changing DScaler's performance settings helps no
end. The full on settings will allow it to grab all the processing time it
can get, usually over 90%. Telling DScaler to give priority to other
software doesn't seem to result in dropped frames and will reduce CPU % to
nearer 20. DScaler drops frames if I start anything else which is really
heavy, regardless of these settings, so I feel I might as well run it with
less CPU overhead. I can't see any picture degradation. You are clearly
running DScaler with priority, given the percentage you quote, so try this.

I used to run K!TV, but I can't remember where I got it. It is freeware
and comes from France. Great for basic viewing and teletext, but lacks the
filters and flexibility of DScaler.

Do you have the latest 4.5.15 DScaler? Also version 5 is on the way and
there may be a beta of that coming soon which will probably have very
different performance characteristics.

Best - Ian.

In fact, I have just put on the latest DScaler as I was a version or two
old. It is better regarding CPU load, even if given priority.

Actually the current version is 4.1.15, not 4.5.15 that I could find anywhere. As far as
priority of usage I had it set for it and other software at like a medium level, fair enough
I thought, because I use internet while watching. But for that CPU % and that level of
heat? I am too poor for THAT! And there needs to far better GUI and mouse control
options. As a result of all, I am not out to give it another chance. Thanks for the replies.

Sure. 4.5.15 was a typo in my post, oops my bad!

I'm still hanging with DScaler because nothing else quite fills my needs.

As stated, I can reduce my total CPU to under 50% with DScaler and a few
apps running, it is running now. Don't know if dual-cores add
complexities to this. Maybe different tuners. Who knows!

Look for K!TV in your travels, you might like that. Actually, I found
the link: http://www.kastortv.org

Cheers.
