WARNING - Don't expect to receive your rebate from Symantec

I am sick and tired of being cheated by rebate scams. Why in the
name of common sense does a manufacturer or retailer want to
employ a method of selling merchandise which causes so much
ill will?
I bought a copy of Norton Anti-Virus from Office Max. Knowing
from past experience that the only way to have a rebate submission
approved is to follow every requirement to a "t", I did exactly that.
And sure enough after six weeks I receive a notice saying
my rebate request was rejected. I am so damn livid about this
that I'm just not going to take this lying down any more.
I have decided to start posting to newsgroups randomly to
warn others who are considering a purchase of Norton Anti-Virus.
Don't expect to receive your promised rebate. I didn't.
Instead buy MacAfee. It is a better product anyway and
they won't cheat you.

I'm intrigued, what do you mean by the 'rebate'? I haven't heard of it.
Doesn't bother me either way, I HATE Symantec either way, I'm a computer
technician in Sydney Australia and have seen FAR too many computers come
into work drugged up to the eyeballs with viruses that (updated) Norton
decides to live in harmony with. I tend to disagree with your choice of
MacAfee but at least you're steering clear of Norton - a wise move. I
find it interesting that when you read computer magazines who are
reviewing the various anti-virus applications they all statistically
show that Norton is not the superior choice, however always rate it
best. How much does Symantec slip into that brown paper bag that is sent
along to these reviewers? It makes me irate to see companies leading the
industry when they really don't deserve to be. Symantec are a prime
example of this. What's even more ridiculous is the phenomenal cost of
their products. I'm not sure of the pricing for MacAffee, I personally
use, support, recommend and distribute Computer Associate's VET
Anti-virus. They have flawless customer support, user-friendly
operation, well updated, and remarkably inexpensive. Personally I think
it's about time Norton was pushed off it's undeserved pedastool until
they make a program that deserves the industry edge.

I received my rebate for Norton. Aladdin hasn't sent the SpamCatcher
rebate, however.

I prefer Avast with a 100 % immediate rebate to home users (it's free).

I don't like the entire rebate scheme (sp? - perhaps should be
spelled "scam"). In fact, I would be willing to give a free meal
to anyone willing to pay to me a fully rebateable $1000 U.S.
dollars in advance (allow me six months for your rebate to be
processed).

....do you prefer veal loaf or bologna sandwiches?

The same thing happened to me. The bottom line is don't buy the software
unless you are willing to pay the "before rebate" price. Which I was with
Norton, since I rather like it.

Mike

I know how you feel. I've had this problem with other rebate "scams". This
is pure theft by the companies which are taking actual money, but all people
seem to care about is warez (which in reality steals no real money). This
is a perfect example of why warez exists.

Well..software programs are not the only bad dogs in the computer world.
Many computer and monitor, mouse, etc. mfg's are just as guilty. I bought a
new HP computer and monitor package. I was supposed to be entitled to a
250.00 USD$ rebate on the monitor if bought during the sales period, which I
bought it within, and a 200.00 USD$ rebate on the HP PCU within the same
period, which I did. I only got 100.00 on the PCU and nothing on the
monitor. I followed the instructions to the letter, and had them verified
by the sales person at Sears before I sent them in that they were according
to the requirements, but, I still got the royal shaft. What was the reason
for the denial? It did not meet the necessary requirements. When I asked
them to stipulate in detail where I failed to meet the requirements, they
never replied to my letters, phone calls or e-mails. Just, nothing. I then
went to Sears and told the store manager about how the company was ripping
people off with false advertisements and rebates, and how it really made
their company look a bit cheesy too. He said he would pass it along to
their marketing people. I see they are still handling the same false rebate
ads for the same mfg's.

The only time I ever buy anything that speaks of a rebate is when the rebate
is up front, off the purchase price, like on some snack foods or other
non-essential types of things. :-)

I agree, JC - it is very bad practice. But since it exists and is unlikely
to go way, one has to protect oneself. Hence don't buy if you don't like the
pre-rebate price.

Instead get AVAST free, and then you don't have to worry about
rebates.

For those of your who don't mind the missed trojans... If you purchase the
NAV upgrade online, the rebate is automatically deducted from your purchase
price.

Well.. Norton is no bargain for me at any price, and I would not put it on
my machine if it were free. Trojan's is not all it misses.

If I were to 'buy' an AV program, it would be Nod32.

Admittedly, I have never bought a NAV product, but I have received
every rebate I have ever submitted. Even one that was stolen out of my
mailbox! I called the company and they canceled the check, waited 60
days (I think) and then mailed me another check. I ALWAYS make copies
of every document sent and keep duplicates of the rebate certificate
as well.

Symantec will give only one rebate per address. I want to have the same
software on all our machines.

Despite all the warnings about companies offering rebates on their products,
i still brought Norton Antivirus and I must be one of the very few who
actually received the Symantec rebate!
