i bought this PC thinking it was brandnew. come to find
out it was bought buy someone who programed windows xp
into her name and returned it to the store. how do i get
her stuff out of it

Personally I would recommend using your restore disc or Windows XP CD-ROM to
format the drive and do a complete reinstall. There is no telling what sort
of things the previous owner has done to it.

Tid the store represent the computer as new?
If so take it back for an exchange.
If not and/or you bought a dispaly model etc, you may just need create
a new profile.
Go to User Accounts in Control Panel, select the option to Create a
profile.
Then when you are done, you can delete the original profile with the
unwanted data.
Be sure you create at least one Administrator profile.

The best way is to perform a Clean Installation:
Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:

Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.
