I'm still looking for a utility which will capture the image from a
webcam (the type which updates every few seconds, showing some far-away
place; not the type used for video conferencing) and either save them to
a directory, named sequentially, or combine them into a movie.

Any suggestions, please?

Google for "Pryme". That is what I use.

Remove yourhat to reply ... but it
may take a while. Best to go to www (dot) mistergeek (dot) com and
reply from there.

Irfanview can be configured to capture all or part of the screen every xx
seconds. Shots are dated and timed. Go to Options > Capture/Screenshot.

That sounds more like what I want, but would require me to have the
webcam in the active window - I want something which will work while I'm
busy doing something else.

Thank you, but that, too, sounds as though it is for people with a
webcam on their computer - I want to view a webcam at a remote site, and
log the images.

Photomail send instant webcam pics to your friends.

Again, that is for people with a webcam on their computer, not viewing
and recording a webcam at a remote site.
