Ben, I've had Irfanview several years and sure didn't know it will do
that. I have looked over it again and I don't see how to do it. Please
give me a clue.

Hi, L.D. (and baker),

If you're only going to scan in a piece of paper and create an image of
it, it can be treated as any other image.
Once the image is loaded into Irfanview (I'm using v3.91), create a
selection on the image where you want the text to be.
On your keyboard, press Ctrl+T which will open a dialog box to add text
to the image.
Add all the text you want to add and then save it as a *new* image (so
you don't write over the original).

Oh, okay Ben, I see how that can work. That could certainly be
applicable for the occasional form; however, IMHO, could be a nightmare
for a large number of or complicated forms.

I guess I was thinking more in the line of how ScanSoft Form Typer works
in PaperPort. It identifies probable areas on the scanned image where
input might be desired, and also allows for manually placed fields. One
can tab through the sequence of locations to type the entries. The
typed-in content can be printed along with the form image, or can printed
alone onto pre-printed forms. Of course, absolutely none of it is
freeware.

Yes, Irfanview would only be good for the occasional form that's scanned
as an image.
I'm not aware of any freeware equivalent for 'Form Typer'. Doesn't mean
it doesn't exist, though. :)

No, I'm not aware of a freeware equivalent, either. I happen to own
PaperPort and Form Typer as earlier versions of it came with a scanner I
owned. I've kept it updated as it's proven rather handy. There are
other commercial "form filler" packages that are even better, but I
wouldn't spend the money on them as they are rather expensive.

There are a couple of other freeware packages I've seen in the past
couple of years, but they weren't particularly convenient to use. I
don't recall the names of them.
