Hello,
Is their a programme that would show me the night sky and identify stars
according to my latitude & longitude ?
I'm after a simple, friendly programme, don't want to be baffled with
science etc.
Thanks.

Mike.

I've tried a lot, but my favourite is Cartes de Ciel, the English version
is here

http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/

I think it is hard to beat - a very nice switchable display, support for
telescope control, and Artificial satellites, and iridium flares, plus a
lot more downloadaable catalogues.

You will certainly find the basic package (a very reasonable 3.9 megs) will
cover all your needs.

Frank Bohan's suggestion of Heavens above is also very good - you can
register - it is a trusted site, by me, anyhow - and then you wilo
immediately be able to access sky charts and learn of ephemera for your
area;

I could also suggest uk.sci.astronomy for your specific questions, they are
pretty friendly and very knowledgeable

I like "Sky," which is actually a screensaver, but can be started from a
shortcut or command line. Information and several different versions to
download here:

Once the latitude, longitude and display choices are set, there's
absolutely nothing to fiddle with. One quirk: about one out of every three
times I start it, it displays a blank screen, but no star map. Press a key
to exit, restart, and it works fine.
