Hi group,

I've been using Metapad for quite some time now. Only thing I'm
missing is the ability to block-select text.

Hence the question: anyone know a freeware light-weight Notepad
replacement, having the features of Metapad PLUS block selection
mode?

TIA,
Wald

I think so, but can you define "block selection mode?"

Is this a column selection? Row?

Or something else?

AFAIK there isn't (yet) a 'notepad replacement' with the feature you
want. There are several text editors that support block selection but
all of them fall in the category of 'Programmers Text Editors', two
of them are:

SciTE (Scintilla Text Editor):
<http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html>

-and-

JFE (Jens File Editor):

notepad2 seems a good metapad alternative ;-)

I guess I mean column selection. It's very handy for editing ASCII
data files... example, for ultimate clarity:

time prop1 prop2
1 10 46.2
2 11 48.1
3 12.2 46.9
4 13.3 46.8
5 14.2 47.4
6 14.9 47.7

Block selection allows you to conveniently select the whole
"prop1" column and delete it, so what remains are the time + prop2
data.

Hi;
xint can do block selection (column selection mode)
Avaliable from http://www.xtort.net/xtort/xint.php

Apologies for the above statement as it's plainly wrong. Notepad2 (by
Florian Balmer) supports block selection:

I've installed Notepad2 and it looks good, but it does not seem to do
block/column selection as such. Instead it has these commands:

Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn Goto previous/next block.
Ctrl+Shift+PgUp/PgDn Select to previous/next block.

I might stick with Notepad2 for a while anyway, as it's pretty slick.

Yes it does, just press the Alt key, then select a block.

I don't know about light-weight (900Kb), but Tera text editor does block
highlighting.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I'm settling for Notepad2 for now, looks
great and *almost* as snappy as Metapad.

Thanks Uncas!

that xint editor is one of mine, it and subpad both do column select,
but are not as feature rich as "Scite". That editor is brilliant--it
uses that "SCintilla" component. It (Scite) can be a bit tedious for
the average user to configure it at first, as this is done with a
config file instead of dialog, but is worth it. It supports multiple
document UI, has toolbar, etc. The big plus is that it folds code too.
But as mentioned above, it is more of a "programmer's editor" than a
notepad.

Notepad2 is very good too, as it also uses that Scintilla edit
control. Then, there is this very, very good text ed:<a
href="http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm">Notepad++</a>,
it also uses that Scintilla control, but is more user-friendly for avg
users as opposed to Scite.

Metapad's competitor, the equally priceless EditPad, does column select.
Turn off word-wrap, use a fixed-width font like Courier, and hold down the
ALT Key

Yes it does, just press the Alt key, then select a block.

I stand corrected. The manual does not call it block or column selection:

- Rectangular selection (Alt+Mouse)

It works pretty well.
