Want your opinion on saving video clips

I have 40 hours of tapes I want to put on DVD. I have started copying the
tapes to my pc using MM2. I am going through each very quickly and doing
simple editing (I get about 1 hour of video from each 2 hour tape). My plan
is create a folder for each tape called Tape1, Tape2, etc.... I am keeping my
video clips to no more than 10 minutes each and called the Tape1a, Tape1b,
etc... After all tapes have been copied I plan to go back to each clip and
divide it into smaller clips with better names like Bayby_rolls_over,
New_puppy, etc.... I then plan to grab various clips to make different dvds
such as a dvd of all my son's birthdays and another of all my vacations. Does
this make sense? Am I forgetting anything? Any idea on a better naming scheme
to logically group clips?

maybe create a database of some sort, to keep a corresponding detailed
description of each clip. there may be instances where you want to use a
clip in more than one category. i.e. baby rolls over AT bob's birthday
party, right before the tree fell on the car. may be hard to classify all
that in a small clip title, but you may want to put that clip on several
different DVD's

| If you are happy working that way that's fine it appears to be well in
| order. Personally I'd dispense with the tape 1a bits and go straight for
the
| description.

That's a good idea. I can use Microsoft Access to create a little database. I
can create a record definition that includes all the fields I might use when
I want to cross reference. Then if I want to create a dvd off all my son's
sporting events I can quickly find every clip that has anyting to do with his
sports. My current job is as a SQL Server programmer so that shouldn't be
too hard. Thanks for the suggestion.

Joining in this thread on the late end, after you said some magic words, see
the Managing > Personal Database page of my website. Scroll down about 2/3
of the way to the 'Change a Record' section. It shows how I keep track of my
tapes and the scenes on them.

My approach is pretty unstructured... but starts with a tape number assigned
to the tape as soon as I start using it.

A word search feature in the database lets me find things any way I want...
