Want USB 2 WITHOUT SP1

I have updated Windows with what the computer (in Add/Remove Programs) calls
"XP SP1 Hotfixes," but apparently I don't have the full-blown SP1 update to
my XP Professional installation.

The problem I am having is that it's causing my built-in USB2.0 ports to not
work at all. No matter what I do I can't get around it. So I've about
decided to just buy a PCI card with USB 2.0 and use that.

Apparently though even with some of THOSE you STILL have to have SP1 update
to XP to work with the PCI USB 2.0 card. Is this universal, or are there PCI
cards which I can purchase, install THEIR drivers to get USB 2 and not have
to absolutely update XP to SP1?

R-click "My Computer" and see if it says SP1 or go to start, run and type
"winver" (no quotes). If not, go to "help and support" and scan for updates
and download SP1a.

SP1 contains several fixes which are NOT available in the hotfixes, include
USB2 functionality. If you want it, then you are going to HAVE to install
it. Before long, apps will start requiring it anyway. Why the resistance
to installing SP1?

Is the reason you haven't installed the full service pack
because it takes too long to download? If so, you can get
it on cd from microsoft. Have you run the windows
update?

If you are dial-up, you can set the Windows Update to
reconnect and it will run all night long. It also keeps the
telemarketers from calling.
Set Internet Explorer dial up to not disconnect, and to
re-dial dropped connections.
Windows Update supports resume.

My State's "No Call List" takes care of that very nicely
Not had a single one since signing up for the list.

Probably has that "Corporate" version that SP1 won't install on
<grin>

I managed to fix it without SP1. How? I read posts of how Microsoft
once had USB 2.0-specific downloads at their site which fixed this
without the need for an update--but they no longer had the files. But
I found a guy who had saved the files and put them on his website (it
was an archived Google thread). I went there & the files were still
there. With a little trial & error, I got it to work.

I will be emailing that link in another message to come soon.

Also, some aftermarket PCI-based USB cards (can't remember which
brands) have their own drivers rather than relying on the SP1 update,
this circumventing that requirement.

I have no qualms about installing SP1 except that I would find it
irritating to HAVE to have it to have USB 2 given that USB 2 has been
around as long as XP itself, and that drivers with the PCI-based USB
ports should cover it without relying on having XP-SP1.

Besides that, I did download SP1a and it wouldn't install. Apparently
my computer has a version of XP Professional which has a keycode (?)
that is considered "hacked," thus I am stuck. Otherwise, I'd gladly
install SP1a.

If you're copy is legitimate, then a 5 minute free call to MS can solve your
issue with the product key, and one you should spend the time to do as it's
worth it... On the other hand, if you DO have an illegal copy, well...
that's one of the consequences... :)
