Don`t do it!!!Win 98 is pretty stable and it doesn`t crash.Win Xp has been
nothing but a nightmare.

Berry;
Your data should be safe. Back-up important data just in case.

Also verify your computer is ready for Windows XP:

I`m running AMD k7 2 gigs,512 ram 40gigs HD,one hell of a graphics card
......
That`s not the issue

If you are disputing my statement, nothing you said disputes it.
Fast and compatible are not the same.
Additionally Windows XP has issues with memory and other hardware
other OSs do not.
As well as a host of other possibilities.
The problem most likely lies with the computer.

Go for it Berry, I did it and have not looked back. BUT do as Jupiter says
and run the compatablity test.

I wouldn't do it if you have an ageing PC, drivers can be a problem, it took
me 3 weeks on and off to sort out the teething problems. My webcam still
won't work as there are no drivers for it and never will be! I have 2 in
sealed boxes as well Doh!

Also XP is very resource hungry. My 700 Athlon really struggles on the games
scene where as Win98/ME ran things fine.

On the positive side it's far more reliable and slicker once your used to
it.
System specs would of been useful for a more accurate reply.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

HOW TO Prepare to Upgrade Win98 or WinMe
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q316639

If you need or want to perform an in-place upgrade, Microsoft has
greatly improved (over earlier versions of Windows) WinXP's ability to
smoothly upgrade an earlier OS. WinXP is designed to install and
upgrade the existing operating system while simultaneously preserving
your applications and data, and translating as many personalized
settings as possible. The process is designed to be, and normally is,
quite painless. That said, things can go wrong, in a small number of
cases. If your data is at all important to you, back it up before
proceeding.

And from which specific alternate reality are you visiting? In
terms of relative stability, Win98 = Jell-O, and WinXP =
ferro-concrete.

So? Nothing in your statement even addresses compatibility, much
less the quality or the free-from-defect state of the various
components.
