Want to replace FX-55 with X2

I have an AMD FX-55 (in my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe), which I'd like to replace
with an AMD X2 processor. I want to do this at minimal cost. Can someone
please advise me on the best way/place to sell my current FX-55 processor?
I have the boxed version, but it is installed in my system.

Will I have to reinstall Windows XP Pro for it to recognize the second
core?

TIA

Ebay, they're bidding on them now. Expect about $500 or more for it.

Ebay (even though I hate the place), and you should have no problems with
just dropping it in.

You can just plug it in and go... windows will setup the dual core cpu...
just remember to flash your motherboard to the latest bios (supporting the
X2) before you make the swap.

WHY?!? What do you do with the system?

Chances are, you won't get much visible performance boost with the current X2,
and will likely see a reduction in performance on any single-threaded apps.

I disagree, the X2 will still run at 2.6ghz (overclocked a bit) but with two
cores... If the X2 isn't worth it the hyperthreading P4 is definitely not
worth it.

I do not know the answer for Windows XP, but for Windows 2000 it is
yes. The setup process selects either a single-processor or
dual-processor kernel depending on the hardware detected at
installation time.

OK, good. I could not find this info anywhere about Windows XP, even on
Microsoft's site.

With both Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows 2000 Professional, when
upgrading from a single to dual CPUs, the OS had to be completely
reinstalled. I.e. the HAL's were specific to single and dual processor
systems.

If XP Pro doesn't need a reinstall, that's a major improvement...

I really do love the FX-55. But, I've been doing a lot more video editing
than gaming, and I need to do this for work. So, X2 will be better for me.
Yes, I do know that it will be slower in games, and I will be sorry to see
the FX-55 go...

Thanks - I went through that before on Win2000. I cannot find any info on
this regarding Windows XP Pro in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. And none of
the X2 reviews mention this issue, either...

I would make sure the BIOS was at the latest version first.
