I manually select MSoft updates to my XP machine (no automatic downloads).
Accidentally I downloaded SP3. I did not install SP3 and do not want to.
How can I find the un-installed SP3 and delete to stop the "Updates are ready
for your computer" message from pestering me?

Try search in my computer, locate SP3 download & delete it.You cant run a
SP3 uninstaller unless SP3 is actually installed in the OS.

But which files should be deleted? I don't see a file named "SP3 Download,"
but I do see all kinds of various files in variouis places that appear to
have been download as part of that process.

Please provide a list!

Why does the MS website tell you to rename the file instead of delete it?
(Quoted below) I just want it GONE!

Method 5: Clear the Software Distribution folder, and then retry the
download operation
1. Log on to the computer as Administrator or as a user who has
administrative permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click
OK.
3. Right-click Automatic Update, and then click Stop.
4. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following in the Open box:
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution
5. Click OK.
6. Right-click the Download folder, and then click Rename.
7. Type Download.old, and then press ENTER.
