Nothing to learn, really. Try using GrabIt for downloading, maybe
PowerPost for posting.

If you're using OE, right-click...or otherwise arrive at PROPERTIES for your
news server. Go to the advanced tab. Set the option to break apart
messages and put 500 into the number box on the right. Click APPLY and
follow the bouncing prompts out.

To combine a multipart file, hilite all parts, right-click in the hilited
area, select 'combine and decode'.
 
Binary News Reaper 2 is pretty useful for downloading ,it allows 12
simultaneous connections/threads to make the most of your bandwidth,and as
someone else mentioned, PowerPoster 2000 is good for uploading
