Itz Just Me

I'm not really a 'power user' (yet...LOL) but would like to learn the
basics of registry editing. I think the theory is more important than
just a list of procedures. And no doubt someone here will be able to
recommend a website or two that will give someone a decent background
in how this works. I have XP Pro.

Hi

Have a look at the following link - but please remember editing the Registry can make your PC unbootable/unusable in certain circumstances:

http://www.winguides.com/article.php?id=1&guide=registry

Ensure that you have made a backup of the Registry before editing it. Try the following program - ERunt - it can be used to backup/restore the Registry - a much better option than trying to backup the Registry via the Registry Editor:

http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/

Please read/download the accompanying documentation.

Would I be better off buying sofware, like Norton's System, and let it
find broken links and other problems? I'm mostly concerned with
getting rid of registry entries for software I've uninstalled. But, I
would like to learn how the registry works, even if I clean it up with
someone else's program.

I tried someone else's registry tool before and it totally messed up
my computer (my last one, not this one.) Fortunately, system restore
took care of the problems. I had copied the registry settings, too.

Thanks.

Hi

Manually editing the Registry for 'orphans' is not practicable. Try System Mechanic from www.iolo.com Have a look at the Winguides link I posted earlier - it will give the basics of how the Registry works. Then try www.amazon.com for books on the subject - you'll find some reviews there as well.

No, no, no, do not waste money on Norton system doesn't works. Thee are better, free options available.
