It depends on how you installed it (perhaps with
a third-party boot loader?), and where (c:\Windows,
d:\Windows, somewhere else?).

The process I did:
1) Install Win2K on partition c.
2) Run Win XP CD in Win2K
3) Install Win XP on partition d
4) Then got the dual boot.

1. Boot into Win2000.
2. Rename d:\Windows to d:\Windows.XP
3. Run this command via Start / Run: notepad c:\boot.ini {OK}
4. Remove the reference to Windows XP.
5. Wait a week.
6. If all is well, delete d:\Windows.XP.

If you want to reinstall it, boot from the XP CD, select new install,
pick the XP partition to install to, and format the partition.

I got 3 partitions:
C, D and E.

If I deleted the partition D when re-install the XP, will the partition E
becomes D ?

Depends how you do it. If, in Windows setup, you delete the partition
and immediately recreate it, it remains as D. If, on the other hand,
it was already deleted when you run Windows setup, then when you
create it, it will become F (the CD drive will be E). There's no
reason to delete it; just format it during Windows setup.

Pay attention to the setup screen that shows the disks and their
partitions. Each partition will have a drive letter assigned to it.
Those are the drive letters that Windows XP will have after it has
been installed.

What would happen if I just run installation on partition D without
formatting it ?
ie. install XP on the top of my existing XP.

The reason is my existing XP cannot be upgraded to service pack 2 and now I
purchased the XP.

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

purchased the XP.

I don't understand the above sentence.
