Want new Windows XP users to automatically be joined to workgroup

Every time I make a new user on my newer Windows XP PCs, I have to join
them to the .mdw workgroup file that have on 1 file server. These
computers have Office 2002 installed (not an upgrade).

Other PCs with Windows XP but with Office 2002 upgraded from Office 2000,
do not require me to join the workgroup for each new user I make.

Can anyone help me make the newer computers work the same way as the older
ones did?

I do not want to use the shortcut to specify the workgroup because we are
always opening a lot of different .mdb files.

It's because these are upgrades. At some point, when Office 2000 was
installed they were joined just as you have to do now with the new
computers. No way around that.

Joan,

I think perhaps it does have to do with the upgrade to Office 2002. But
the PC that was upgraded to Office 2002 still links new Windows XP users to
the Access workgroup automatically. Whereas, with the PC where Office 2002
was installed fresh(not upgraded) new Windows XP users ARE Not
automatically on the workgroup. I want the new users to be automatically
linked to the workgroup because if they are not and they open an .mdb file
it locks other users out of the .mdb file. And that is a big problem for
us.

I understand that, yes. It makes sense.

There is no way to do this, except using the workgroup administrator on the
machine, since you don't want to use desktop shortcuts.

Well that is a different issue altogether. Joining them to a workgroup has
nothing to do with locking other users out. Usually this happens because
users do not have the correct permissions on the folder where the mdb file
is located - they need read, write, create, delete permissions or they will
lock other users out.
