Want a more quiet CPU Cooler

I just upgraded my trusty PIII 450 system. Actually the only thing I kept
were two previous component upgrades, my 80 GB HD and my Asus V7100 GeForce
2 MX Pro 64MB Video Card.

I intended to purchase an Asus A7N8X-X with a Athlon 2600+, but I accidently
ordered the Via based A7V8X-X motherboard and chip bundle instead. I'm
thinking I'll build this motherboard combo into another system, sell it, and
get the nvidia chipset A7N8X-X that I inteded to get for myself. I'm not
the overclocking type, but I'd sorta feel better having the Nvidia board
since I had heard such good things about it. Am I being silly? Making a
mountain out of a molehill? I figure I can turn a profit on the system I
sell and subsidize my upgrade.

I get the feeling this VIA based motherboard would work out quite nicely if
I wanted to stick with it. I'm a little less kean about the heatsink and

I didn't have any expectations that they'd bundle a high end heat sink and
fan, but I had hoped a stock fan, not intended for overclocking, would be a
bit quieter.

page for the cpu cooler I got stuck with (but mine has a "G" on the end of
the model number). It's spec'd at 30dB, and I apparently find that too
loud. I'd love some reccommendations for a better heatsink fan combo.

In keeping with my plan to build the VIA based Mobo into another computer
and sell it, I'm considering getting a 2nd Mobo/Chip combo from either
http://www.bzboyz.com/store/product3090.html or the same place I got my last
(misordered) one from http://tinyurl.com/2ut6u. Any recommendations for a
shop to order from? I'd prefer it be outside of California so I avoid sales
tax :-)
Both of these places I spotted offer upgraded cooling options, but neither
are very descriptive as to what you are upgrading to. I can pick a specific
model cooling option through the website another way, I just need to know
what to select. So any suggestions for a well priced quiet cooling option
are much appreciated.

Last week I put together a build with a A7N8X-X refurbed board for 41 bucks with
a retail 2500 Barton for 80 bucks both from Newegg. Put it in a Sonata refurb
for 67 bucks and it runs silent and cool (32c idle).

Even with sales tax, that's real hard to beat. This is the fourth refurb board
that I have purchased from them in the last 6 months and they have worked
flawlessly ( 2 A7N266-VM, 1 A7N8X-DX and the A7N8X-X ).

I wish I could say somethin nice about that Via board but I have heard too many
complaints lately. That could be a problem for you or maybe not.

Use a Speeze heatsink with an 80mm fan rather than a 60mm fan. The
FalconRock is one such example.

You might be able to use a quiet 60mm fan on your existing Speeze cooler,
however cooling will suffer.

Ed thanks a lot for the info. I like the refurb idea. I didn't know they
were available. I wonder under what circumstances these are being
refurbished. It says they are done by the original manufacturer so I guess
newegg gets them from Asus.

It says it's the newer A7N8X version that supports the Barton core. With
the Dual Channel mode chipset, shouldn't the A7N8X be the more expensive
one? I think I might just need to grab that.

May I ask what you've been up to in the last 6 months buying 4 refurb
boards? Building machines and selling them?

The idea there being that the 80mm fan won't have to spin as fast, hence not
as loud, but will move the same ammount of air thus doing a sufficient
cooling job? Since I'm going to ditch this Via board and get the nForce
based model that I meant to get, I'll make sure to get a better cooler with
it. Any reccommendations for a well priced, quiet, good quality cooling
option? The A7N8X-X or athlon 2500+ of the cooling world :-)

It's a disease. I use to be a drunk and a womanizer but I find if I keep myself
busy building computers then I don't chase wimmenz and drink hard likker.:)

Actually, I'm just a hobbyist that enjoys building and refurbing for my kids and
grandkids. I only started doing this because I got pissed off at Compaq's lousy
support and I knew that they were all like this. I figured if I wanted to enjoy
computers then I better learn to fix them. After I saw how crappy the Compaq's
and the HP's were built and the cheap and proprietary parts that were used, I
decided to try to build my own. It's a lot of fun but I do envy the real pros
in here that have a great deal more expertise and knowledge than I do. I have
learned an awful lot in this group.

It's fun but not much cheaper than likker and wimmenz.

Pricing @ newegg doesn't always make a lot of sense, it's hit-or-miss what
a given board sells for, more or less expensive.

Keep in mind that Asus refurbs generally don't come with any
accessories... for instance the rear I/O shield, aka- backplate. More and
more newer boards don't use a standard backplate so unless you're in the
mood to fabricate one you'l be needing to get in touch with Asus to
order/buy one, if they won't send it free (which they will do from time to
time).

You can check their pictures to see what else the retail board comes with
that (probably) won't be included with a refurb'd board. Some of the
other brands of refurbs, like Gigabyte or MSI, have better odds of coming
with at least "some" of the accessories.

An 80mm fan can spin at lower RPMs while still moving a sufficient amount of
air to provide cooling. More importantly, the pitch of the sound it creates
is much less harsh than that of the 60mm variety.

Order the retail variety of the 2500+. It comes with a heatsink and 60mm
fan. If the HSF is not to your liking, buy a third party make, like the
Speeze, Spire, or TR2TT(Thermaltake).

The stock heatsink keeps my Athlon XP running at 2200MHz cool enough to run
Prime95 for days on end, with little noise.
