Waking up from stanby

I have two computers using WinXP Home, and which are in a MS workgroup via
an Ethernet hub. Each is set to go into standby after a period of
inactivity. Each computer also has a shared desktop folder permitting files
to be transferred easily.

However, if Computer A tries to open the shared folder on Computer B while
it's in standby, access is denied.

Is there a way to configure these computers so they can each be awakened by
a remote request from the other computer?

Check the following:
Go to Start -> Run and enter devmgmt.msc in the Open box.
Click OK.
In Device Manager, click on the + sign next to Network
adapters.
Right click on your network adapter and select Properties from
the drop down menu.
Click on the Power Management tab.
Make sure there's a check mark in the box next to "Allow this
device to bring the computer out of standby".

Interestingly, one computer has the power management tab, the other, a
laptop doesn't. Is this a function built into some ethernet adapters and
not others?

I really don't know the answer to your question. I'm not enough
of a laptop expert to give you a definitive answer. I suspect
it could be a number of possibilities with the adapter being
one of them. You might want to contact the laptop manufacturer
to see if the system is even capable of supporting a network
card that can bring the machine out of standby.

You might also want to post your question to the XP networking
newsgroup. One of the experts there may have dealt with this
issue.

Here's that newsgroup:

Good luck
