When I wake my machine up after a Stand-By everything looks normal and I get
the user log in screen (I don't need the boot up to stop here as I am the
only user) but the computer is frozen. I can't move the mouse and even a
control/alt/delete has no effect. My only option is a complete power down
and up with the resulting tests and checks. Any ideas as to why this is and
how I can over come it.
Thanks Charlie

Hi Unknown! yes this is each and every time. I haven't tried the Alt Tab yet
as it is such a palavar to get it running again that when I am busy like now
I am ashamed to say I leave the machine running all day eating up kw of
wasted power. When I get the chance i will try Alt tab and let you know. Wht
doesn't an MS MVP answer this? Are they aware that this is a fault and won't
say? At least some feedback from MS would be useful?

I have had a chance to try it out and sure enough it hung again. No amount of
pressing of any keys had any effect in fact the keyboard and the mouse have
no effect whatsoever. I tried to make something happen by pressing every key
on the keyboard but nothing. The funny thing is that all else appears as
normal, it downloads mail and it tells me when someone logs onto messenger
but I can do nothing but press the power key to shut it down and then again
to reboot. Pity that Micro Soft are not interested but they probably know of
this fault and have no cure thinking that Vista will cure all!!!!!

In control panel---keyboard---hardware---properties---power management---do
you have this set to allow keyboard to bring out of standby?????????

yes i have just checked but I didn't really need to as when all is shut down
on standby I tap the keyboard and it immediately comes to life and any mail
downloads etc but even though I can see my Outlook page I can do nothing as
the mouse is frozen and the keyboard has no effect. All is static but is
still working beyond my control. The mail is still sent/recieved on the timer
but i can do nothing!

This has all the symptoms of a hardware failure. In control
panel--system---advanced, what are your settings when a failure occurs? Are
you restarting and logging errors?
