Waiting for thumbnails.

I posted this last week, thanks for the suggestions but
I'm still no nearer.... Before reinstalling XP, the
thumbnails in my pictures folders always appeared
virtually instantly. Since I carried out a fresh XP
installation they take ages to appear on screen and then
are usually badly drawn unless I click "refresh". It
seems the thumbs arent being saved anywhere.... I must
have a setting wrong somewhere but can't for the life of
me find it..... Pleeeeeease help...... Keith

PS. I now have all the latest drivers... thanks Mary!
 
laptop or desktop?
have enough memory...512mb?
good quality monitor?
monitor driver up-to-date?
